I Need A Passport, Part 4

January 19th, 2010

I could go on a long rant about how you manage to lose a Senate election, in Massachusetts, for Ted Kennedy’s seat, and the gross malpractice necessary to do that, but plenty of other people are already managing it. (If you aren’t familiar with the comedy of errors, as usual The Daily Show has the definitive version of events.)

I could talk about how our country is not only refusing to deal with the horrible, horrible things that our leaders did–and are doing–in the name of our “security”, but actively electing and re-electing people who think torture and illegal detention are good things rather than crimes against humanity and a stain on our national honor, but clearly no one is listening.

I could talk about how the Democratic leadership, from President Obama on down, has spectacularly failed to lead, failed to offer meaningful change to the American public in even one single area, and failed to make the Republicans pay even a political price for their destructive policies and rampant obstructionism…but I just can’t.

All I can do is look at what I wrote a year ago, and be sad.

I am no longer proud of my country. I am on the verge of being ashamed.

  • INTERPOL Granted Diplomatic Immunity In the US
  • - I wonder if this is a way of bypassing some of those pesky legal restrictions on law enforcement behavior. Not that the restrictions are followed much in the first place, but now the government can let INTERPOL do all the pesky civil rights violations and keep the FBI’s hands clean, and the CIA out of it all together. –Joe

  • Nelson's Ransom
  • - Eventually, it stops being “compromise” and starts being “blackmail.” This nonsense has to end. Senators Nelson and Lieberman are destroying this bill, and will then turn around an campaign on having helped pass it. Enough is enough. –Joe

  • Thirty US Senators Voted to Defend Gang Rape
  • - We now have a list of the senators who are so completely in Haliburton’s pocket they couldn’t even vote for an amendment that defends basic human rights for women even once it was clear it was going to pass.

If these 30 senators are not pounded into the ground with this vote the next time they’re on the ballot, their opponent will be guilty of gross incompetence. –Joe
